At 10pm on Saturday 10th December 1994, I really wanted to be at home, fast asleep. I had finished college for Christmas the day before and I was really tired from all the celebrations in the last week of term. However, I had decided to go along on the Saturday to the last retreat weekend in Birmingham of the 'Set My People on Fire' seminars.
Eddie had finished his talk and Frank was leading us in a time of praise and worship. I was feeling really exhausted but I thought we would not be here for long so I would try to be enthusiastic. But God had other ideas! Frank was praying with Vernon for quite some time (it felt like ages!) and I was beginning to feel frustrated with God for not getting on with it. After all, God knew I wanted to get home. I even asked God to tell Phil, who was giving me a lift, that we really ought to go.
After a while Eddie said that we were free to leave and not to feel guilty if we had to go. Suddenly I felt an urgency to stay and prayed that Phil would want to stay too. In retrospect, I don't think Phil had any intention of leaving. We were told to be united in prayer and to help us to do that we formed a circle holding hands around Vernon who was lying on the floor, and Frank, who was sitting on the floor next to him, praying for him and laying his hands on him.
As we were praying I glanced down and I thought I saw one of his legs grow. One leg was shorter than the other and by now it was evident that Frank was praying for the shorter leg to grow. Suddenly I felt vulnerable and insecure - I had prayed with the belief that it would happen but if it was happening that would be a different story. It was beyond the realms of my experience and I wanted to run out the room, break down into tears and be on my own to think about it.
Then I remembered being told a few times during the seminars that it is not that we need to see a miracle but that others need a miracle. Vernon obviously needed this miracle so I chose to stay and pray for it. I readily admit that I have never felt so nervous about praying for anything!
That night Vernon received his miracle. When he stood up and walked it crossed my mind that although we were smiling and thanking God we were remarkably calm. I expected that when a miracle took place people would be hysterical but we were peaceful and joyful. A lot of my expectations were challenged that evening. Ihad to firmly believe what I confessed to believe and it was very difficult. I praise God for that miracle and I praise God for giving me the choice to believe, to stay and to see. Hallelujah!
